Know before you go to Miami

Money, tickets, safety and manners: the small things that make the first day easier.

  • Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Book flexible fares and insurance if you travel then.

  • Metromover is free

The elevated Metromover loop around Downtown and Brickell costs nothing to ride. Metrorail takes contactless cards and phones.

  • Tip 18 to 20%

Tipping is expected in restaurants, bars and taxis. Check the bill first, as some places add a service charge.

  • Don’t leave bags in cars

Break-ins on parked cars are a common problem, so take your valuables with you. Park in staffed garages when you can.

  • Respect the sun

The Florida sun is strong all year. Use sunscreen, drink water and take a break in the shade at midday.

  • Obey the beach flags

Rip currents can form on Miami Beach. Swim near a lifeguard tower and don’t swim when a red flag is flying.

What to eat in Miami

Local dishes and drinks worth trying, and where people go for them.

  • Cuban sandwich

Roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles pressed in Cuban bread, served at the cafés of Little Havana and Calle Ocho.

  • Cafecito

A small, sweet shot of Cuban espresso, ordered at a walk-up window (ventanita) and drunk standing.

  • Croquetas

Crisp fried croquettes with a creamy ham or chicken filling, sold with coffee at Cuban bakeries.

  • Stone crab

Claws served chilled with mustard sauce, in season from 15 October to 1 May at seafood restaurants.

  • Key lime pie

A tart custard pie with a graham-cracker crust, found at bakeries and diners across South Florida.

Day trips from Miami

Three well-known days out, with the usual journey time each way.

  • An alligator swimming in the water in the Florida Everglades

    Everglades National Park

Shark Valley is about 25 miles west of Miami by road

A vast subtropical wetland of sawgrass, alligators and birds. Shark Valley has a paved loop to walk or cycle, and airboat tours run nearby.

  • The Southernmost Point buoy in Key West

    Key West

About 160 miles by road along the Overseas Highway; most visitors stay overnight

Cross the Seven Mile Bridge to the end of the Keys, with its Old Town, harbour and the Southernmost Point buoy.

  • Fort Lauderdale beach and coastline from the air

    Fort Lauderdale

By Brightline or Tri-Rail from Miami; check operators for times

A beach city with a promenade, canals and a boat-lined waterfront, easy by train from downtown Miami.

Miami: questions travellers ask

Short answers first, with the official page where it matters.

  • December to April for dry, sunny weather. December to April is the driest and most comfortable season, with sunny days and lower humidity, and it is also the busiest and priciest. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so book flexible fares and insurance if you travel then.

  • Miami International (MIA) is the main airport, with nonstop flights from London and other UK airports, and many connections from the rest of the US. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL), about 45 km north, is the alternative; compare fares into both and add the cost and time of getting into the city.

  • From London, it’s about 9h 30m nonstop; from New York, about 3h nonstop. These are rough guides worked out from distance; scheduled times vary by airline, direction and connection.

  • It depends on your passport, so check the official page before you book: U.S. Customs and Border Protection: ESTA for Visa Waiver Program travellers. Rules change, so check them again shortly before you travel. U.S. Customs and Border Protection: ESTA for Visa Waiver Program travellers (opens in a new tab)

  • Metrorail and the free Metromover cover Downtown, Brickell and the airport link, but the beaches and other districts are easiest by ride-hailing app. Many visitors hire a car for the Everglades and Keys; many Florida toll roads are cashless, so ask the rental firm how tolls are charged.

  • Three to four days covers the beaches, Wynwood and Little Havana. Add a day for the Everglades or a trip to the Keys.

  • December to April is the driest and most comfortable time, with sunny days and lower humidity. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon storms, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.

  • MIA is the closest to Downtown Miami and has Metrorail. FLL is in Fort Lauderdale, about 45 km north, and is useful if it has a cheaper fare, so compare fares and add the transfer.

  • Yes, if you travel under the Visa Waiver Program: British citizens need an approved ESTA before boarding. Apply on the official US government site; our ESTA and UK ETA guide explains how.

  • Not for South Beach, Wynwood or Downtown, where Metrorail, Metromover and ride-hailing work well. A car helps for the Everglades and the Keys.

  • No. Miami Beach is a separate city on an island across Biscayne Bay from Miami, linked by causeways. Most visitors stay in one and visit the other.
